Tarangire National Park:
I saw more elephant in one day here than
I’ve seen in all my previous African visits combined. With permanent water
provided by the Tarangire River and habitat ranging from thick scrub and
open plains, to rolling hills, there is wildlife everywhere. Parked on the
riverbank one lunchtime, I simply didn’t know what to watch: two elephants
having a tussle, lions fighting over a kill, or zebra coming to drink. The park
is considered an extra bonus to Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater so many
tourists pass it by – ensuring very peaceful game viewing.
Northern Serengeti:
The Serengeti is popular, but it’s also vast. The
quieter northern region with its rocky outcrops and gentle hillsides is
alive with wildlife, with new sightings around every corner. A ten minute
interlude watching a grumpy klipspringer (small antelope) pushing an
unfortunate hyrax (like a big guinea pig) from a rock, closely followed by a
cheetah chasing a scrub hare into a burrow was pretty astonishing. Then of
course there is the famous wildebeest migration from June-October.
The Grumeti Reserve:
Adjacent to the Serengeti this magnificent
350,000 acre reserve, with its iconic open plains dotted with acacia trees,
is one of Africa’s most beautiful settings. There is constant activity with
clusters of antelope, zebra and warthog as far as the eye can see. Big
herds of elephant occupy the thicker bush and a journey of giraffe is never
out of sight. For a real ‘Lion King’ experience, this is the place to be.
Family favourites:
Tanzania, just like neighbouring Kenya, is a great spot for a family safari. Here are some Aardvark favourites:
