Drumbeat UK Winter 16 - page 8-9

Aardvark’s
African
safari year
April:
still no sign of spring, then how about a
change of scene in Namibia’s stunning desert?
Take a flying safari and you get the highlights
of this extraordinary country in just a few days.
For a more leisurely approach it’s a great place
to try a self-drive safari.
May:
the start of the dry season in Zimbabwe
heralds superb game viewing in some of
Africa’s most beautiful wildlife parks. You’ll find
a huge range of adventurous activities and as
many styles of accommodation. A great time to
visit the Victoria Falls with the flow at its peak.
June:
the Zambian safari season gets underway
and now’s the time to enjoy a walking or canoe safari.
Travelling at the gentle pace of the surrounding wildlife,
you’ll get a completely different view of the animals
and their daily routines. The South Luangwa is a
leopard hotspot and the range of lodges offers every
accommodation experience there is in Africa.
July:
a stunning time to visit Botswana with flood waters
at their highest in the Okavango Delta. There are plenty of
options here including riding, mobile safaris and walking
safaris. Botswana combines brilliantly with South Africa
and Zambia.
August:
looking for something different to entertain the
children this summer? Why not introduce them to the
wildebeest – one of Africa’s most charismatic creatures.
Their annual migration is perhaps the most spectacular
wildlife event on earth, and in August the herds are
heading into the Masai Mara where the sheer density of
animals is quite simply astonishing.
September:
for something more exotic head to
Madagascar where you can visit enchanting lemurs,
enjoy breathtaking scenery and relax on beaches that
rival the best in the world. Superb whale watching off
Ile Ste Marie at this time of year.
October:
prolong the summer with a safari in Malawi
where you’ll find an unexpected wealth of wildlife,
stunning scenery and a rich cultural history. The lake,
with its unspoiled islands, beautiful beaches and glorious
lodges is a ‘must do’ for a few nights.
Year-round there is somewhere in
Africa and the Indian Ocean with
sunny days and great wildlife. Here
are some of our favourite places to
visit month by month.
November:
a perfect time to explore some
of Africa’s wonderful Indian Ocean beach
locations. Mauritius offers sophisticated resort
hotels, the Seychelles a wonderful collection of
island hideaways, and the northern and
southern Mozambique coasts do barefoot
luxury as well as anywhere in the Caribbean,
and without the jet lag.
December:
for a truly memorable festive
season try celebrating Christmas ‘safari-style.’
Stay in a private safari house, take a camel
assisted walking safari, spend time with the
meerkats; whatever you choose we promise
you won’t miss Rudolph and his sleigh one bit.

January:
safari in Kenya and you’ll have superb wildlife.
The Masai Mara is excellent and less visited at this time
of year, the whole country offers fascinating culture
and fabulous beaches – think about adding gorilla
tracking in Rwanda and Uganda for the ultimate East
African adventure.
February:
perfect time of year to climb Mount
Kilimanjaro and don’t miss a few days on Zanzibar
afterwards to celebrate your achievement. Head to the
Serengeti and you’ll see the wildebeest beginning to
calve on the southern plains.
March:
go the Kruger National Park, an exceptionally
beautiful region and home to a treasure trove of wildlife; an
essential part of any South African safari. Combine it with
the Cape area for a really sophisticated safari experience.
