Drumbeat UK Winter 16 - page 2-3

Africa brings so many opportunities. No matter how often you go on safari, there is always
something new to fall in love with. We take pleasure in helping you achieve your wish list, whilst
recommending the hidden gems and out of the way places that turn your safari from a good
holiday into the trip of a lifetime.
We only operate in Africa and the Indian Ocean, as we have for over 16 years, and our ‘little
black book’ of contacts is without compare. We have worked with the majority of our suppliers
for many years and we visit them regularly. As an Aardvark guest, you can expect the finest
service from the very best in Africa.
We look forward to talking to you.

JO GORDON
‘To the south is the sandy island of Benguerra, within easy access of anywhere in southern Africa but most especially if
you’re coming from the Kruger. The handful of lodges here are all outstanding, but if I had to choose a favourite it would
be Benguerra Lodge where the beautiful design and friendly staff – many of whom seem to have been there forever
– make an idyllic combination. Being able to ride here, as well as the usual beach-side activities, was a great bonus.
‘The northern coastal region, accessed via flights from South and East Africa, is all about enchanting private islands and
barefoot luxury. The diving and snorkelling is superb and each island hideaway has its own character – so you could
easily combine a couple after a safari. I fell in love with Quilalea, a tiny slice of heaven where a wonderful management
team and great range of activities create the perfect barefoot luxury destination.’
Magical
Mozambique
Alice has also spent some time in the region and after a recent trip to Ibo Island in northern Mozambique, she
comments, ‘I felt as though we were exploring one of the last discovered corners of Africa. It’s not your usual beach
add on, but as a once important trading post for slaves and ivory, Ibo’s streets are steeped in history. Stay at Ibo
Island Lodge, housed in three magnificent mansions each over 100 years old, and you can wander at leisure. The
islanders are wonderfully hospitable – we were invited in to jewellery workshops and schools – everyone seemed
genuinely interested to meet us. Only a 20 minute transfer from Quilalea which Jo mentions above I would highly
recommend a visit.’

The island archipelagos off Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coast rival some of the best beaches
in the world. Powder-white sand, exceptional diving and exquisite accommodation await those
who alight these remote shores. As Jo Gordon reports from her recent trip, ‘I can quite see why
these stunning regions make such a wonderful complement to a safari.
