Drumbeat Winter 18
www . aardvarksafaris.co.uk l P12 REPORT BY ALICE Malawi a hidden gem for a family holiday Although not as well known as its neighbours for prolific wildlife and five star lodges, Malawi felt perfect for a relaxed family holiday and easily accommodated my plans to include walking, a proper safari and some time on the beach. Immediately apparent on our route, which took us from Blantyre in the south to Likoma Island on Lake Malawi further north, was the strong sense of family prevalent among Malawians. Obvious everywhere we went, it made it very easy for us to spend time together. just buzzing with wildlife. We boated down the river, watching hundreds of elephant splashing about and spotting crocodiles and endless birds. On game drives we saw sable, kudu, waterbuck, impala, bushbuck, buffalo, warthog and zebra. There are hyena, cheetah and black rhino in the area too and lion are being introduced next year. The kids loved it, the guides and staff were excellent and the pool was a perfect place to while away the hottest part of the day. Spending a morning in a local primary school, just outside the park, was another highlight. My children were so impressed that they asked to go to school in Malawi. So, on to the beach and Kaya Mawa. This glorious spot is a true African gem and I’d end every Aardvark Safaris holiday here if I could. It’s like the film set from Mamma Mia combined with the best restaurant – I’ve not had better food in 18 years travelling to Africa – you have ever been to. Super relaxed, you shed any worries at reception, kick back and do exactly as you want. That might be relaxing and reading a book on one of the massive beach bed swings (all five of us fitted in one), or taking to the lake for kayaking, kite surfing, scuba or snorkelling. If you want more activity there is Likoma Island to explore on foot, by push bike or quad bike. It’s the most brilliant place and I’d go back every year if I had the chance. A holiday in Africa with children can seem a little daunting but it is also so rewarding. They’re eager to learn, there are no prejudices, they travel without worries and every new adventure is embraced with gusto. My girls were gripped and exhausted in good measure on a quite simply wonderful family holiday. We started at Zomba Forest Lodge, a charming spot on the edge of a forest half way up the Zomba plateau. No electricity or WiFi (heaven) we were surrounded by gorgeous views, a chorus of birds and chattering monkeys. The food was lovely and walking through beautiful forests, alongside rivers and waterfalls was spectacular. We didn’t have time to try the riding and cycling – something for my next visit I hope. For our safari we chose Mvuu Camp in Liwonde National Park. As soon as you’re through the park gates you enter a lush, green Garden of Eden
